윈저 체어가 영국에서 시작되어 식민지 시대의 미국에 전파된 것은 널리 알려진 사실입니다. 그리고 영국과 미국의 윈저 체어는 조금 다른 방향으로 발전해온 것 같다고 생각된다. 형태와 구조, 제작 방식 등은 다를 게 없지만, 윈저 체어에 대한 문화적 인식이나 평가가 다르달까. 그에 따라 디테일한 디자인도 다르다.
여러 곳에 이에 대한 내용이 설명되어 있지만 좀 더 명확하게 알고 싶어서 영국의 윈저 체어 메이커인 James Mursell에게 이메일로 물어보았는데, 아래와 같이 답변이 와서 허락을 받고 이 곳에 인용한다.

If you look at early English Windors they are not at all plain. If you can get a copy of Michael Harding Hill’s book you will see what I mean. They were originally made for aristocrats for use in their very grand gardens and then in due course they came indoors. Over time their popularity spread down the social scale and they became simpler, plainer and less expensive. Not a large number of the early chairs have survived.
One of the biggest differences between the US and UK is that the Americans value their Windsor chairs far more that we do. This is a cultural thing and nothing directly to do with the chairs themselves. To many current Americans, Windsor chairs are aspirational furniture – they aim to have a set in their dining room, living room or kitchen.
The American chairs began life about 20 years after they became popular in England and the same progression took place spreading from the wealthy to the ‘lower classes’.
I describe the physical and stylistic differences between the two traditions as follows:
If you look at an English chair you see the wood, whereas with an American chair you see the gaps between the wood. American chairs are lighter both physically and in looks. American chairs in my opinion are more elegant and there is much more shaping in the seat. English front legs are almost vertical whereas American chair have well splayed legs. American seats usually taper to a line at the front, whereas English chairs may be vertical and show the thickness.
초기의 윈저는 평면적이지 않다. Michael Harding Hill의 책을 보면 무슨 말인지 알 수 있을 것이다. 윈저 체어는 원래 귀족들이 정원에서 사용하기 위해 만들어졌고 나중에는 실내로 들어오게 된다. 윈저가 인기를 얻고 사회적 규모로 널리 퍼지면서 윈저는 단순해지고 장식이 사라지면서 가격이 싸졌다. 초기 윈저 의자들은 많은 수가 남아있지 않다.
미국과 영국 윈저의 가장 큰 차이점은 미국에서는 영국보다 윈저 체어에 대해서 더 많은 가치를 둔다는 점이다. 이것은 의자 자체에 대한 것이 아니라 문화적인 차이다. 현대의 많은 미국인들애개 윈저 체어는 꼭 갖고 싶은 가구이다. 그들은 다이닝 룸, 거실, 부엌에 윈저 체어를 갖고 싶어 한다.
미국의 윈저 체어는 영국에서 윈저 체어가 인기를 얻은 지 20년쯤 후에 시작되었고, 부자들에서 일반 서민들에게 전파되는 같은 과정을 거쳤다.
나는 다음과 같이 두 윈저 체어의 물리적이고 스타일적인 차이점들을 설명한다 :
영국의 윈저 체어를 보면 나무가 보인다. 반면에 미국의 윈저 체어는 보면 나무 사이의 공간이 보인다. 미국의 윈저는 물리적으로나 외형적으로나 더 가볍다. 내 의견으로는 미국의 윈저는 더 세련되었고 더 다듬어진 좌판을 갖고 있다. 영국 윈저의 앞쪽 다리들은 거의 수직인 반면 미국 윈저는 벌어진 각도의 다리들을 갖고 있다. 미국 윈저의 좌판은 앞쪽 가장자리가 다듬어져 있지만 영국 윈저는 수직면을 갖고 있어서 나무의 두께가 보인다.
